A made bed instantly brings calm to your bedroom. Yet many people skip making their bed in the morning because it seems to take too much time. Good news: with the right approach you can make your bed in about ten seconds. The secret? Fewer layers, less hassle and no duvet cover that keeps going crooked. In this article you will read how to go about it.
Why make your bed?
It is a small moment, but it makes a difference. A made bed gives your bedroom a tidy feel, and in the evening you get into a bed that looks inviting. It is also a nice little habit to start your day with: one task already done.
A tip: many people leave their bed open for a while after getting up, so it can air. Fold back your duvet, open a window, and make your bed once you have finished getting dressed or having breakfast.
What makes bed-making so slow?
- A cover that shifts. The duvet slides down inside the cover, the corners are empty and you have to straighten everything again.
- Too many layers. A sheet, a duvet, a throw, a bedspread and five decorative cushions: each item takes time.
- No fixed order. Without a routine, you have to think about it again every morning.
The 10-second bed: how to do it
Seconds 1-3: Plump up the pillow
Take your pillow, give it a few pats and place it at the top of the bed.
Seconds 4-7: Spread out the duvet
Take the duvet by the two top corners and shake it out over the bed in one movement, like shaking out a tablecloth. Let it settle and straighten it.
Seconds 8-10: Smooth it down and done
Run your hand over the duvet and, if you like, fold the top edge back a little. Done.
This works best with a duvet without a cover. Because the cover is attached to the filling, nothing can shift. What you see is what you get: one neat layer.
Tips for a bed that always looks neat
Choose the right size
A duvet that is too narrow quickly looks messy and shows the edges of your mattress. A commonly used rule of thumb is that your duvet should be at least 40 cm wider than your mattress. If you are unsure, check the size guide.
Keep the number of pillows limited
One or two pillows per person, possibly with one decorative cushion. The less you have to rearrange, the faster you are done.
A throw as an accent
Want a little extra atmosphere? Lay a folded throw over the foot of the bed. It looks well cared for and takes you two seconds.
Choose a calm colour or a reversible duvet
A plain colour quickly looks neat. If you want some variety now and then, a reversible duvet is handy: flip it over and you have a different look, without having to get out a different duvet cover.
And changing the bedding?
Changing your bed is also faster without a duvet cover. You take the duvet off the bed and put it in the washing machine as a whole. After drying, you put it back, shake it up and you are done. No hunting for corners, no stuffing a duvet into a cover.
Snoozella duvets can go in the washing machine at up to 60 °C and then in the tumble dryer. Read more about the routine in how often should you wash your duvet.
The 10-second bed for the whole family
Children can often make their own bed perfectly well when no duvet cover is involved. One duvet, one pillow, shake it out and done. That makes it easier to turn it into a habit together.

Frequently asked questions
Should I make my bed straight after getting up?
You do not have to. Many people first let the bed air for a while with the duvet folded back and a window open, and make it afterwards.
Do I still use a sheet under the duvet?
You still use a fitted sheet over your mattress as usual. An extra top sheet is not needed with a duvet without a cover.
Does this also work for a large double bed?
Yes. With a large duvet it is even faster with two people: each takes a corner, shake it out and done.
