White quilted microfibre duvet being put into a large front-loading washing machine – how often should you wash your duvet

How often should you wash your duvet?

A clean bed sleeps better. But how often should you actually wash your duvet? The answer depends on the type of duvet you have.

Bedding: every week or every other week

For bedding, such as your duvet cover, pillowcase and fitted sheet, most experts advise washing it once a week, and at least once every two weeks. Wash at 60 °C if the label allows it. After all, skin flakes, sweat and house dust mites collect in your bed.

A regular duvet: a few times a year

With a traditional duvet, you mainly wash the cover. The duvet itself goes in the wash much less often, often only a few times a year. Large duvets also do not always fit in a regular washing machine, so it often gets skipped.

A duvet without a cover: just as often as your bedding

With a washable duvet without a cover, the cover is attached to the duvet. So you wash the whole duvet at once, just as often as you would otherwise wash your duvet cover. That sounds like more work, but it is actually less: no cover to wrestle off and back on.

At what temperature?

A Snoozella duvet can go in the washing machine at up to 60 °C. That is also the temperature often recommended for bedding, partly because house dust mites do not survive that temperature. Afterwards, the duvet can simply go in the tumble dryer on a normal programme.

Tip: work with two duvets

With two duvets there is always a clean one on the bed while the other is in the wash. That way you never have to spend an evening without a duvet.
