Large 240x200 duvet in the drum of a large-capacity washing machine

240x200 duvet without a cover: will it fit in your washing machine?

Do the two of you sleep on a 180 or 200 cm wide mattress? Then a 240x200 cm duvet is the logical choice. But as soon as you choose a duvet without a cover, a practical question comes up: will a 240x200 duvet actually fit in your washing machine? The short answer: that depends on the drum. In this article you will read how to check that and what you can do if your own machine is too small.

Why drum capacity matters so much

A duvet needs room in the washing machine. It has to be able to move, absorb water and rinse out properly again. If it is packed too tightly in the drum, it gets less clean and detergent residue is more easily left behind. In addition, the spin cycle can be less effective, so drying takes longer.

For a 240x200 cm Snoozella duvet, you need a washing machine with a drum of at least 10 kg. For comparison: 140x200 and 160x200 fit in a 5 kg drum, and 200x200 in a 7 kg drum.

How do you know how big your drum is?

Drum capacity is usually expressed in kilos of dry laundry. You can find it in a few places:

  • On the machine itself: often on the front, top or inside of the door.
  • On the rating plate: usually on the inside of the door opening or on the back.
  • In the manual: search by model number if you no longer have the paper version.
  • On the energy label: it states the capacity for the standard programme.

Many modern washing machines have a drum of 7 to 9 kg. A drum of 10 kg or more is less common in households, so there is a chance your own machine is just too small for 240x200.

Your drum is smaller than 10 kg: what now?

Option 1: The launderette

Launderettes often have machines with a large drum capacity, as well as large dryers. That makes them ideal for a large duvet. You wash and dry in one visit, and are usually done within a few hours.

Option 2: Two smaller duvets

Some couples deliberately choose two separate duvets instead of one large one. For example, two 140x200 duvets on a 180 cm bed. Each duvet then fits in a 5 kg drum, and you each have your own duvet. It looks different from one large duvet, so that is a matter of taste.

Option 3: One size smaller

On a 160 cm mattress, 200x200 is enough, and that already fits in a 7 kg drum. On a 180 or 200 cm mattress we do recommend 240x200, so the duvet is roomy enough for two to sleep under. Check the size guide if you are unsure.

Tips for washing a large duvet

  • Wash the duvet on its own. No towels or sheets with it; the duvet needs all the room.
  • Fold it loosely, not tightly. Place the duvet loosely in the drum so it can spread out during the wash.
  • Choose a maximum of 60 °C and about 1000 rpm. That way you get a lot of water out without putting unnecessary strain on the duvet.
  • Do not use too much detergent. A normal dose is enough.
  • Dry thoroughly. In the tumble dryer on a normal programme, with a shake in between. On the washing line? Then let it dry completely, inside as well.

You will find more details in the washing instructions.

Drying a 240x200 duvet

The same applies to the dryer: the more room, the better. A large duvet in a small dryer dries more slowly and less evenly. Take the duvet out of the dryer in between, shake it up and turn it over. If you notice that the edges are dry but the middle is still damp, give it an extra round.

If you do not have a suitable dryer, a washing line or drying rack outdoors is a perfectly good solution. Hang the duvet over several lines so the air can flow around it.

Why still choose 240x200 without a cover?

Anyone who has ever got a 240x200 duvet cover onto a duvet knows what a hassle it is. Especially on your own. With a duvet without a cover, that disappears completely: you lay it on the bed, give it a quick shake and you are done. Many people are happy to trade that for the extra trip to the launderette.

Frequently asked questions

Will a 240x200 duvet fit in an 8 kg drum?

For a 240x200 Snoozella duvet we recommend a drum of at least 10 kg. In a smaller drum, the duvet gets less clean and rinses less well.

Can I fold the duvet in half to get it into the machine?

Folding it loosely is fine, but if you have to push to get it in, the drum is too small. In that case, choose the launderette.

Which mattress goes with 240x200?

A mattress that is 180 or 200 cm wide. That way the duvet is at least 40 cm wider than your mattress.
