House dust mites live on skin flakes and love warmth and moisture. That is why your bed is a favourite spot. Are you sensitive to house dust mites? With a few simple habits you can keep your bed as fresh as possible.
Please note: this article gives general tips and is not medical advice. If you have allergy symptoms, consult your GP.
1. Wash your bedding at 60 °C
House dust mites do not survive a wash at 60 °C. So wash your bedding regularly at that temperature, if the label allows it. A Snoozella duvet can go in the washing machine at up to 60 °C, and because the cover is attached, you wash the whole duvet at the same time.
2. Wash more often than you think
For bedding, the advice is usually once a week, and at least once every two weeks. A duvet you can easily wash yourself makes it much easier to keep that up.
3. Let your bed air
Fold back your duvet in the morning and open the window. That way the moisture from the night can evaporate and house dust mites feel less at home.
4. Keep the bedroom cool and dry
A cool, well-ventilated bedroom is less attractive to house dust mites than a warm, damp room.
5. Do not forget your pillows and cuddly toys
Pillows and cuddly toys collect dust too. Wash them regularly, following the care instructions on the label.
